Cosmic Endeavour Claims 2014 Sapphire Stakes

Talented three-year-old Cosmic Endeavour has produced a strong sprint in the final straight to lead from start to finish and win the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and officially close the inaugural The Championships at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Jumping from the gates well, Cosmic Endeavour quickly took up the early pace, setting a reasonably high tempo over the back straight and rounding the bend in the clear of Aerobatics and Dystopia, before easily pulling clear and finishing a length and a half ahead of a fast-finishing Avoid Lightning and Belle De Coeur.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse completed a memorable day in saddling Cosmic Endeavour to victory in the Sapphire Stakes having already claimed both the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes and Group 1 Sydney Cup, and was impressed with the Northern Meteor filly’s performance for the win.

“This filly in particularly is a really exiting filly” Waterhouse said following the race.

“I said to the owners I thought her best run ever was last Saturday, until today, I loved the way she was up on the speed.

“I said to Tommy today you just use the speed and he said I feel quietly confident. Well, he was more than quietly confident.”

Jockey Tommy Berry secured a third win for the day in claiming the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes, in turn tying with James McDonald and claiming the Nathan Berry Medal for that day’s top jockey; named in honour of his twin brother who tragically passed away only two weeks ago.

“Nathan’s medal; that means more than any Group 1” Berry said following the Sapphire Stakes.

“The Boys have been talking out in the room and it was something everyone wanted to win, and to share it with a good mate James is an absolute honour.

“It’s probably the biggest day of my career as for the circumstances and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to top a day like this.

“Everyone was a bit worried about how Gai was going, but she always knows how to go out with a bang.”

Comic Endeavour is now likely to return to the spelling paddock ahead of a busy 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
