Miss Mossman Ready To Overturn Poor Australian Debut in Oaks

New Zealand raider Miss Mossman has been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) after reportedly overcoming a mild respiratory issue that hampered her maiden Australian appearance when last in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on April 5th.

Performing well in a fast-paced piece of work alongside talented mare Voleuse De Coeurs on Wednesday morning, trainer John Sargent told AAP he is far more confident of a successful showing from his stable’s star this weekend.

“She worked over two thousand (metres), getting serious from the mile and just kept building” Sargent said.

“It was a very good gallop.”

Strolling away to win the major Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) by nearly four lengths in her final appearance before crossing the ditch, Sargent said nothing about Miss Mossman’s run at Rosehill Gardens two weeks ago was characteristic of a Group 1 champion.

“She slipped at the start and got in amongst horses and just over-raced when they walked” Sargent said.

“She was just fighting hard all the way and you just can’t do that.

“She’s betting up there bowling away. Hopefully she can go forward, get herself in a position in the race where she races best at to show she can stay.”

Despite claiming her impressive performance in the New Zealand Oaks, Miss Mossman’s most recent start in the Vinery Stud Stakes has led to her being given little chance of success in betting markets for the 2014 Australian Oaks, currently offered at particularly generous odds of $26.

Having comfortably claimed the Vinery Stud Stakes by more than a length, fellow New Zealand-based raider Lucia Valentina is sole occupant of the top line of Australian Oaks betting, currently featured at short $2.40 odds, ahead of Zanbagh ($6), Rising Romance ($6.50) and Suavito ($10).
