Tupac Amaru A Likely Sydney Cup Starter

Having produced a blistering run for second in last weekend’s major Australian Derby (2400m), trainer Peter Snowden is heavily considering an appearance in this weekend’s Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) for talented three-year-old Tupac Amaru.

Having reportedly pulled up well from what is arguably his standout racing performance to date; Snowden said the three-year-old continues to build in form and skill, displaying a keen turn of foot in the final straight of the Australian Derby to compliment his impressive staying abilities.

“He lacks the acceleration of the good horses, but he is a very strong stayer” Snowden told News Limited.

“In the Derby, he was coming back at the winner (Criterion) on the line. He looked bright and well (Sunday) morning and we are leaning towards starting him in the Sydney Cup.”

Securing one win and five places from only ten competitive race starts to date, Tupac Amaru debuted with an impressive run to finish second behind Equator in the Become An ATC Sponsor Handicap (1250m) on April 10th 2013, before immediately returning to the paddock.

Returning to racing with another strong performance to finish second in the Bendigo Magazine Plate (1400m) in September, the Street Cry colt broke through for a maiden race win in the City Of Ballarat Plate (1600m) on September 22nd.

Continually building towards a career in Group level events, Tupac Amaru finished a fighting second in the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) before more than stamping his claims as one to watch this season with an incredible run for fifth in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) to end the memorable preparation.

Unable to figure in either of the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) or Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) prior to the Australian Derby, Snowden is confident Tupac Amaru can become the first three-year-old to win the Sydney Cup since Tie The Knot in 1998, who also interestingly ran second in the Australian Derby prior to that memorable performance.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Sydney Cup is due to be released by Tuesday evening.
