Peter Snowden’s last start winning colt Sidestep gets their chance at some major prize money in one of Saturday’s key support races on Sydney Cup Day leading the 2014 Royal Sovereign Stakes field at Randwick Racecourse.

Worth $500,000 in total stakes, this year’s Group 2 Arrowfield Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) has attracted a final field of 12 hopefuls.

Five of those come off a last start win including Snowden’s in-form son of Exceed And Excel, Sidestep.

Drawn in gate five for the Royal Sovereign, Sidestep handled a Heavy (8) track at Rosehill on March 29 from the same barrier to win the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m).

While they’re up in class for this they are Group 1 performed including their fourth to Zoustar, a non-surprising non-acceptor for the Royal Sovereign being Royal Ascot-bound, in the Golden Rose last September.

Snowden has also accepted for another Exceed And Excel colt Safeguard (barrier 10) for Saturday who is first-up here last having raced in December.

They’re first-up record is good, the dual Group 3 winner having won all three of their resuming runs including the Vain Stakes at Caulfield in August last year.

The other most notable last start winner is then Ken Kelso’s ultra-consistent Kiwi visitor Bounding in her Australian race debut.

The Lonhro filly has run top two in all 10 of her career starts back home to date including seven turf triumphs, stellar form she’s hoping to bring to Sydney.

Winner of the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1200m) in an all-the-way effort on New Year’s Day, their latest run was another victory this time in a Group 3 sprint first-up on March 8.

The others shooting for back-to-back wins are then Gosford Guineas winner In Cahoots (barrier six), Stratum three-year-old debuting in Sydney here Turquoise King (barrier eight) coming off a Moonee Valley win and the Paul Messara-trained Havana to be ridden by Craig Williams from 11.

Starcraft gelding Havana finally broke their maiden status at start number eight on March 12 at Canterbury in a big four length effort that should have boosted their confidence ahead of a class rise for the Royal Sovereign.

Also in the mix are the likes of Gosford Guineas third placed Dothraki (barrier three), Anthony Cummings’ War Pass colt Never Can Tell with the rails run and Red Ransom filly Thump.

Thump enjoyed a Group 2 Surround Stakes win at Warwick Farm two back before heading to Moonee Valley last start when eighth, albeit beaten only two and a half lengths, to Spirit Of Boom in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).

She’ll appreciate coming back to her own age and down in grade for the weekend then shooting for her fourth Group win.
