Ryan Eyeing Further Success in Royal Randwick Stakes

Producing an incredible record of nine different two-year-old winners this season alone, trainer Gerald Ryan has confirmed he is eying at least two more successes in the age category this season; outlining several entrants for this weekend’s Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) and next weekend’s major Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Winner of last weekend’s Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) via Peggy Jean, Ryan told AAP exciting prospects Aerobar and Ygritte are most likely to line up in this weekend’s Group 3 on day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.

“Ygritte had a couple of weeks on the water walker and I’m happy with both her and Aerobar” Ryan said.

While yet to break through for a maiden race victory, Aerobar has displayed competitive form via placings in the Australian Turf Club Maiden (1000m) on debut and Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on March 8th.

Claiming the Facebook Friends Race Day Maiden (1000m) on debut, Ygritte arguably offer Ryan his greatest chance of success in the Royal Randwick Stakes, finishing second behind Golden Slipper champion Mossfun in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on February 15th before producing a strong turn of foot to finish a nose behind Clifton Red in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) last time out.

Having also nominated relatively unheralded two-year-old colt Standoubt for the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) on Saturday’s impressive race card, Ryan said he is yet to reach a decision as to whether to accept a position in the final field or not.

“I will have a look at Saturday’s likely field” Ryan added.

With a longer view towards April 26th’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes and the final stop of the two-year-old Triple Crown, Ryan revealed Peggy Jean as a certainty and outlined Golden Slipper fourth place getter Believe Yourself as a maybe.

“I will keep an eye on Believe Yourself and she might also go there but Lucky Raquie (Black Opal Stakes winner) will go to the paddock” Ryan said.

“The wet tracks don’t suit her.”

A final field and barrier draw for the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday.
