Imported Irish stayer Voleuse De Coeurs was the big loser of the 2014 Sydney Cup barrier draw; with the talented mare set to jump from barrier 16 in the Group 1 event at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Voleuse De Coeurs will carry the top-weight of 58 kilograms in the Sydney Cup and trainer Mike Moroney believes that she will need plenty of luck to record her maiden Australian race win in the $1 million race on Saturday.
The Teofilo mare made her Australian racing debut with a solid tenth place finish in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 5 and she performed fairly in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at the same venue on March 8 before struggling on a wet track in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 5.
Another stayer whose chances were hindered by the 2014 Sydney Cup barrier draw is Patinack Farm-owned Tremec, who will jump from the outside barrier this weekend.
Tremec has not scored a race win in over a year, but has returned to a semblance of his best form with a third place finish in the Group 3 Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 29 and a tough second in the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) at Royal Randwick on April 12.
Other horses that will jump from wide barriers in the 2014 Sydney Cup include talented mare Epingle (barrier 12), Chris Waller-trained Opinion (barrier 14), veteran stayer Macedonian (barrier 13) and Ken Keys-trained Like A Carousel (barrier 15).
The Offer is currently a clear favourite in Sydney Cup betting markets and has remained steady at a quote of $3 after connections drew barrier 8 for the imported stayer.
The Offer won the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) in impressive fashion on a heavy track during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and he stamped himself as a clear favourite for the 2014 Sydney Cup with dominant wins in the Manion Cup and Chairman’s Handicap.
New Zealand-trained stayer Who Shot Thebarman is the dark horse in the 2014 Sydney Cup and he firmed in betting markets for the Group 1 event in the last 24 hours.
Who Shot Thebarman will jump from barrier 11 with James McDonald on board on Saturday and is chasing his third straight victory after recording impressive wins in the Group 2 Avondale Gold Cup (2400m) at Ellerslie on February 15 and the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) at the same venue on March 5.
One of the biggest drifters in 2014 Sydney Cup betting markets has been progressive gelding Sertorius who will jump from barrier three if he contests the race on Saturday.
Sertorius struggled on a heavy track in the Chairman’s Handicap and trainer Jamie Edwards revealed yesterday that the son of Galileo is no certainty to contest the Sydney Cup this weekend.
One of the most interesting runners in the 2014 Sydney Cup field is Tupac Amaru, who will jump from barrier nine with regular jockey Kerrin McEvoy on his back.
Tupac Amaru has the opportunity to become the first three-year-old since Tie The Knot in 1998 to win the Sydney Cup and looks as though he will relish the step-up in distance after finishing a brace second behind Criterion in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 12.
Rounding out the 2014 Sydney Cup barrier draws are imported stayer Brigantin (barrier six), Queensland Oaks winner Gondokoro (barrier ten), the Nigel Blackiston-trained duo of Let’s Make Adeal (barrier seven) and Desert Jeuney (barrier five) and provincial galloper Gerard Betros.
