Trainer David Vandyke has confirmed exciting filly Arabian Gold is close to being confirmed as a certain starter in this weekend’s $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on day 2 of the inaugural The Championships at Royal Randwick.
A proven performer of damp race tracks, Arabian Gold secured a fourth win from as many starts on wet surfaces with a resounding victory in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick last weekend.
Having also been initially touted for a tilt at the major Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) on the same race card this Saturday, Vandyke told AAP Arabian Gold’s victory over track and distance last weekend has all but decided her course of action this weekend.
“She doesn’t get 2400 metres and she is not paid up for the Oaks” Vandyke said.
“We are likely to get a wet track again for the Queen Elizabeth and it’s tempting to go there with a light weight.”
Strolling home to win the Adrian Knox by nearly two lengths, Vandyke said there is still plenty of options for the Dubawi filly this preparation, with a trip to Brisbane for the Winter Carnival also a very realistic possibility.
“The other race Nick (Moraitis, owner) is keen on is the Frank Packer Plate (2000m, April 26th). That’s the race that launched Might And Power” Vandyke added.
“We are also looking at a Brisbane campaign for Arabian Gold.
“There are a lot of options for her.”
Securing an impressive record of six wins and two places from only 15 competitive race starts to date, Arabian Gold contested a consistent nine race 2013 spring preparation, claiming the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) and unlucky to finish outside the places in both the Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m).
Steadily rising to the occasion this preparation, Arabian Gold finished fifth in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) first-up and was unlucky to be checked in both the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 Keith F Nolan Classic (1600m) prior to her Adrian Knox Stakes triumph.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is due to be released on Tuesday evening.
