Politeness Strolls Home to Claim 2014 PJ Bell Stakes

Jumping fairly and settling at the rear of the field, the Street Sense filly appeared to have given the leaders slightly too much of a head start when rounding onto the Randwick straight however quickly spooled up and exploded from the pack, leaving early straight leader Miniature in her wake and finishing nearly three lengths in the clear of Cosmic Endeavor; Miniature running on for third.

Trainer Robert Smerdon, who celebrated his birthday on Friday, was delivered arguably the best present via Politeness’ resounding victory in the PJ Bell Stakes this afternoon.

“Obviously you’ve got to ride her back; that’s her pattern and her effective style and we’ve learned that over time”

“She got a long way back today, I thought she had a lot to do but she was terrific late.

“She was always going to be better as she got older but I think we had to learn about her a bit and I’ve sort have learnt with the training that the less I do, the better she goes.

“I probably made a mistake trainer her too strong and we were riding her too close; we changed all that around and that’s the real horse.”

Jockey Craig Williams delivered a typically sensational ride on Politeness in the PJ Bell Stakes, and was excited to secure a win for Smerdon on day 1 of the inaugural The Championships.

“I worked her Wednesday a week ago and I remember she kicked after and I said don’t worry about kicking now, I need you to do it at the 200.

“She was dominant, credit to Robert Smerdon and his team and credit to Politeness; she was great, she got the visitors draw she really played with them today and she’s a really high quality filly.

“It’s fantastic; lucky enough to be out here in the front. The Championships; the build up to it is so exciting” Williams said.

While yet to set a follow-up target for Politeness this campaign, a possible appearance in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 26th may come to fruition prior to a trip abroad to Japan.
