Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Talented filly Peggy Jean made her Group 1 debut with a strong win in the 2014 Sires Produce Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick this afternoon.
Peggy Jean was set for the Sires Produce Stakes after her impressive second in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 29, with connections electing to skip the Group 1 Golden Slipper with the two-year-old, and she showed a good turn-of-foot to claim a narrow victory from a brave Scratch Me Lucky, while Cornrow ran on well to finish third.
Gerald Ryan had four of the leading chances in the 2014 Sires Produce Stakes and said that he was relieved to pick up his maiden win in the Group 1 event with the daughter of Myboycharlie – who he believes will be an even better horse during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
“I was petrified that I wouldn’t get a winner and it looks terrible, but the winner is a good filly,” Ryan said.
“From the first day Kerrin McEvoy rode her here and he rang me that night and said that she is a genuine filly and that she would be a better filly in the spring.
“I agree with him, but when they are two-year-olds and they are going good you have a crack.
“I said to the Triple Crown boys that she wasn’t a Golden Slipper filly, she was more a Sires/Champagne and we have just aimed her towards that.”
Nash Rawiller was having his first race ride on Peggy Jean, but partnered the two-year-old in a trial last month and said that he was delighted with the feel of the juvenile and was full of confidence heading into the $1 million event.
Rawiller was forced to weave a path through the rest of the 2014 Sires Produce Stakes field, but Peggy Jean showed impressive acceleration when she found clear running to give the in-form hoop another win at the highest level of racing.
“I had an opportunity to ride her three or four weeks ago in a trial and I came back and said to Gerald if this isn’t a Group 1 horse than I have never ridden one and she lived up to that today,” Rawiller said after the race.
“She is pretty special I reckon and she is just putting it together now.
“You can pick a few races here and she has the Thousand Guineas written all over her in the spring.
“It is great to be winning them and riding in good form.”
