The Offer was well-backed in the lead-up to the 2014 Chairman’s Handicap, after scoring an impressive win in the Group 3 Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 29, and the son of Montjeu stayed on strongly to stamp himself as a clear favourite for the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick.

Gai Waterhouse was delighted with the performance of The Offer and believes that the five-year-old will romp home in the Sydney Cup next weekend, but the moment was all about Berry, who has shown incredible bravery and maturity in the past week.

“That was Nathan’s win today,” an emotional Berry said after the race.

“It has been the hardest week of my life that is for sure, but no harder than what it has been for Nathan himself.

“Coming here today and being able to ride a winner for him is very special.

“It is not just something that I love doing, but it was something that Nathan loved doing and I am very fortunate that I can live my dream as well as mine.

“It has been a pretty long week since Nathan has passed and I’ve been waiting for that winner to pay him back.

“The support here with the crowd, the ATC and everybody that has supported us with the funeral and everything along the way.

“You can’t thank them enough and we will never be able to thank them for everything that they have done, but it just shows what a great man and a special brother that he was.”

Patinack Farm-owned Tremec, who won the Chairman’s Handicap last year, battled home strongly to finish second from Hippopus, while leading Sydney Cup contender Sertorius could finish no better than fourth after finishing in the same position in the in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens last weekend.
