Leading jockey Craig Williams is confident talented two-year-old colt Unencumbered is more than a chance in this weekend’s Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), despite given little hope of success in betting fields.
Disappointing when unable to match the last pace of eventual champion Mossfun and tenth in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) last weekend, Williams told TVN is believes Unencumbered will return to the winner’s circle this weekend after drawing the ideal barrier 2.
“I’m delighted with the barrier draw. I wish we had that draw in the Golden Slipper” Williams said.
Having jumped well and settled in good position in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds last Saturday, Williams said if anything, Unencumbered was simply unlucky on the day and is optimistic of an impressive career for the son of Testa Rossa.
“There were two different races and unfortunately, I was in the wrong race” Williams said of the Golden Slipper.
“I thought he acquitted himself really well for the run that he had. I like the horse; he has just an amazing constitution.
“I hope he can win a Group 1 for all the connections and Bjorn.”
Debuting with an impressive turn of foot to win the Sharp Plate (1000m) ahead of classy competition, Unencumbered claimed four consecutive race wins over December and January, including the Group 3 McLachlan Stakes (1200m).
Unlucky when blocked for a run and fifth behind Mossfun in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) Unencumbered once again showed his worth when second behind Ghibellines in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) prior to the Golden Slipper.
Currently featured at particularly generous odds of $14, Unencumbered is outright seventh favourite for success in the 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
Yet to finish outside the places in four career starts to date, Peggy Jean is currently outright $3.50 favourite and clear market mover in ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes betting fields.
