Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
This weekend in Perth a double shot of Group racing action will take place at Ascot Racecourse including the WA Sires’ Produce Stakes 2014 where Karrakatta Plate winner Hobart Jones is the top fancy.
Running as Race 6 on Saturday, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) field features 14 two-year-olds, including the Vernon Brockman-trained Hobart Jones.
The smart grey So Secret colt dominates WA Sires’ Produce Stakes betting at a quote of $4 despite drawing wide with barrier 13 of 14 for their latest assignment.
It’s a wide barrier they have the class to overcome however as they shoot for their fourth career win at start number six.
Their form this time in has been improving and things came to fruition for them at the track on March 29 when they won the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) in a fine effort.
They are up in distance on Saturday, but so are the bulk of their rivals, and based on what they’ve produced so far the 1400m shouldn’t be a problem.
There are then four other single figure fancies in the WA Sires’ Produce Stakes odds this year with:
- #7 Cadenza ($5.50) – Dan Morton-trained Oratorio filly has won two of her four starts to date, most notable the Perth Magic Millions 2YO Classic in February, ran a nice second in the Black Type Gimcrack Stakes a month ago but ran wide in the Karrakatta and finished a disappointing ninth she’ll be out to atone for her
- #12 Dancing Express ($7) – Another daughter of Oratorio, Neville Parnham’s juvenile was fourth in the Gimcrack and then sixth in the Karrakatta Plate but beaten only a length and a half last time out when blocked for a run, should get the run of the race this time however from the inside alley so a definite threat
- #8 Vitalism ($7.50) – Tiarnna Robertson’s Vital Equine filly looking to break their maiden status at start number five after coming close in the Karrakatta when only a long neck away second to the winner after missing the jump, if they are quicker from the gates here could turn the tables especially over more distance
- #10 Big Caroline ($9) – Drawn in the car park but still in with a shot, this Simon Foster-trained Blackfriars filly enjoyed a Bunbury win in February from a wide barrier before going down by the narrowest of margins to Jezpark in the Listed Supremacy Stakes at the start of March, Karrakatta Plate fifth last time out from barrier 12 of 16 was full of merit
Also in the mix just outside these top four picks are then the lightly raced duo of Choisir filly Prete A Partir ($10) for Lou & Dion Luciani and Parnahm’s last start 1200m winner Crown Choice ($12) both having just their third career starts here.
Other notable hopes not without their claims for a WA Sires’ Produce Stakes upset then include Parnham’s Mutawaajid colt Star Glitter ($17), Not A Single Doubt gelding Breckenridge ($17) coming off a win at Pinjarra and the early market mover Settlers Creek ($18).
