Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Confirmed to line up for his maiden tilt at a Group 1 level race in this weekend’s 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick, apprentice jockey Damien Thornton is confident talented two-year-old Time For War has what it takes to secure a win at the highest level of Australian racing.
Having partnered Time For War to two victories from as many race starts to date, Thornton told RVN he believes his bond with the exciting Snitzel colt will go a long way in the ATC Sires’ Produce this weekend.
“I’ve always been the only one who really gets along with the horse” Thornton said.
“I’d had a little bit to do with him before he races and it just so happened that I was on him in his first start and I got him across the line.
“Ever since that day I have always been on him.”
Having secured his maiden stakes win aboard Time For War in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) last time out, Thornton conceded there are still things the two-year-old could work on, but is confident of their chances this weekend.
“He has a few little tricks, not just to ride; his barrier manners are pretty poor to say the least” Thornton said.
“He had plenty of gear changes the other day, which has seemed to do the trick, so hopefully we can get the job done again on Saturday.”
“I’ve got to be really mindful of him in Saturday; He surprised me when he hung out like he did when we won the Pago Pago Stakes. He hadn’t hanged like that all prep or in any of his trial or track work, so he really surprised me.
“His work on Tuesday morning was really good, and I think he’ll be very hard to beat; no one’s been able to get past him yet.”
Beating out talented company in both the CFMEU Mining & Energy Plate (1100m) on debut and Pago Pago Stakes most recently, Time For War is currently featured as outright fifth favourite in betting markets for success in the 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes at a particularly generous quote of $8.
Having produced consistent racing careers so far, 2014 Golden Slipper (1200m) fourth Believe Yourself and Peggy Jean currently share the top line of Sires’ Produce betting at $4 odds, ahead of Kumaon ($6) and Lucky Raquie ($6.50).
