Spirit Of Boom Sole Entrant for Gollan in 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes

Brisbane-based trainer Tony Gollan has confirmed only one of his stars, Spirit Of Boom, will remain in Sydney to contest this weekend’s Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m), with stable mate Temple Of Boom to be floated back to Queensland today.

Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 21st last start, Gollan told TVN track condition and a brief break prior to the Brisbane Winter Carnival were the headlining reasons for Temple Of Boom’s absence at Randwick this weekend.

“Temple will go home today and have a three week gap before he runs in the Brisbane Winter Carnival, but Spirit will definitely go to the T.J.” Gollan said.

“Like a lot of trainers we’re just hoping for a drier track.

“Anything in the dead range or better would be ideal, but if the track is heavy it would seriously diminish our chances.”

Arguably the most unlucky horse not to claim a Group 1 title prior to the William Reid, Spirit Of Boom seemingly returned to the track in typically unlucky form this season, having finishing second in both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) prior to his triumph.

Having returned to work well over the last fortnight, Gollan said he expects Spirit Of Boom to line up in perfect order on day 1 of the inaugural The Championships this weekend.

“We’ve had three weeks between runs which is perfect for him; his work at Warwick Farm this morning was terrific and he got through the ground OK” Gollan added.

“The horse feels great and Michael Rodd will ride him again.”

Spirit Of Boom finished outside the places just once in an impressive five start spring preparation, claiming the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) on October 19th and working towards a strong run for fourth in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on November 23rd.

A complete final field and barrier draw for the 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes will be released following a ceremony at Royal Randwick this evening.
