Trainer Gerald Ryan is hoping in-form sprinter Snitzerland can emulate the feats of her wet-weather specialist father on what is likely to be a damp track at Royal Randwick this weekend in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) on day 1 of The Championships.
Having saddled Snitzel to success on a drenched track for the 2006 edition of the Oakleigh Plate, as well as several of the champion sire’s offspring in proceeding major events, Ryan told AAP he is not sure if Snitzerland will be able to overcome a wet surface as she is yet to contest a race under such conditions.
“Some of them handle it, some of them don’t” Ryan said.
“I don’t know if Snitzerland will’ she’s never been on it.
“Maybe she will be like her father, she is fit and well and I thought her recent barrier trial was good.
“She will run wet or dry.”
Securing an impressive record of eight wins and five places from only 18 race starts to date, Snitzerland’s 2013 spring preparation was hampered by illness, ruling her out of several featured Group 1 races.
Arguably one of the highest performing horses not to break through for a maiden win at the highest level of Australian racing prior to her current preparation, Snitzerland finished second to Piero in the 2012 edition of the Golden Slipper before returning to the track that spring to post four wins from only six starts.
Returning to the track this season in typically blistering form, the talented four-year-old finally registered a maiden Group 1 title in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up before placing a competitive second in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) most recently on March 15th.
A final field and barrier draw for the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes is due to be released following a ceremony to officially open The Championships this evening.
