Team Hawkes-trained Messene is currently a clear favourite in 2014 Doncaster Mile betting markets, but may need a bit of luck after drawing barrier 18 this afternoon.

Messene overcame a wide draw to win the Listed National Sprint (1400m) at Canberra on March 9 and is set to start from barrier 16 once the emergencies are removed – a gate that housed Catalan Opening (1998), Patezza (2005) and Haradasun (2007) when they took out the Doncaster Mile.

Talented Kiwi colt El Roca is on the second line of Doncaster Mile betting markets and will start next to Messene after drawing barrier 17.

El Roca has performed well at the highest level of racing without winning in his part two starts, finishing in the placings in the Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) and George Ryder Stakes (1500m), and will be attempting to become the first horse in the last 30 years to win from barrier 15.

Boban will carry the top-weight of 58 kilograms and his task was not made easier after connections selected barrier 19 at the 2014 Doncaster Mile betting market.

The Bernardini gelding has previously won over the famous Royal Randwick mile, winning the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) after jumping from barrier ten, but will need to be at his very best to record his fourth Group 1 victory on Saturday.

Other horses that are expected to drift in 2014 Doncaster Mile betting markets after drawing wide are George Main Stakes winner Streama (barrier 21), Chris Waller-trained Royal Descent (barrier 20), imported galloper Slow Pace (barrier 22), Japanese mare Hana’s Goal (barrier 16) and Golden Mile winner Fat Al (barrier 15).

One of the big winners from the 2014 Doncaster Mile barrier draw was Hawkspur, who will jump from barrier eight with regular jockey Jimmy Cassidy on board.

Hawkspur started his autumn preparation with a poor performance in the Group 1 Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 8, but returned to his best form with a third place finish in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

The Purrealist gelding recorded one of the most impressive victories over his racing career over the Randwick mile in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and should receive one of the runs of the race from barrier eight.

Imported galloper Weary was allocated gate 13 at the 2014 Doncaster Mile barrier draw, but is set to start from barrier 11 once emergencies Malavio and Gypsy Diamond are removed from the field.

Waller was unsure whether he would run Weary in the Doncaster Mile after he recorded an impressive win in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude last weekend, but the Astronomer Royal gelding will make his Australian Group 1 debut and will be ridden by Tommy Berry who is chasing his second straight win in the race after winning with Sacred Falls last year.

Other horses that will start on the inside of the 2014 Doncaster Mile field are veteran gelding My Kingdom Of Fife (barrier seven), Guy Walter-trained Toydini (barrier three), George Ryder Stakes runner-up Speediness (barrier one), Ron Quinton-trained Monton (barrier four) and imported galloper Lidari.
