Waller Likely To Field Six in 2014 Doncaster Mile

Leading trainer Chris Waller has revealed talented miler Boban is close to a certainty for this weekend’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on day 1 of the inaugural The Championships at Royal Randwick, despite previously outlining other major events as likely targets for the four-year-old.

With a likely appearance in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) just one week later, Waller told AAP while yet to make a final call, Boban is likely to line up with a race-high 58kgs.

“I will make the final decision on Monday but I’m leading towards running” Waller said.

“If we wait until the Queen Elizabeth the following week then we might be running on a heavy nine or ten.

“He is a racehorse and it’s realistic to expect him to carry the top weight.

“Everything suggests he should be there.”

Returning to the Group 1 winner’s circle with an impressive turn of foot to win the 2014 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 8th, Boban is likely to lead a six-pronged attack from the Waller stables on the 2014 Doncaster Mile, with Royal Descent, Hawkspur, Sacred Falls, My Kingdom Of Fife, and Weary all appearing in nominations.

“Royal Descent is well on target” Waller added.

“She had a big weight in the Coolmore and drops here.”

Hawkspur is yet to reach peak condition in 2014, however Waller is confident the classy four-year-old is capable of returning to the forefront this weekend after trialling well and confirmed to be partnered veteran jockey Jim Cassidy.

“Hawkspur had a nice trial the other day and I think this suits” Waller added.

“Sacred Falls has been set for this race all along and My Kingdom Of Fife will run, if he wants to run.”

A final field and barrier draw for all Group 1 races on opening day of The Championships, including the 2014 Doncaster Mile, is due for release on Tuesday evening.
