Golden Slipper 2014 Odds Update – Earthquake Eases

Bring Me The Maid

The price on Peter Snowden’s 2014 Golden Slipper favourite Earthquake continues to ease ahead of this afternoon’s major at Rosehill Gardens.

A capacity field of 16 two-year-olds will fight for the richest prize for their age in the world in Race 8 at 5:00pm (AEST) in Sydney – the $3.5 million Group 1 Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m).

Clear favourite in the Golden Slipper odds both pre and post-field has been Exceed And Excel filly Earthquake.

Major Golden Slipper Betting Moves:

  • #9 Earthquake – $2.50 out to $2.80
  • #10 Mossfun – $5.50 into $4.20
  • #14 Bring Me The Maid – $13 into $9
  • #3 Ghibellines – $12 out to $13
  • #1 Unencumbered – $14 out to $16
  • #5 Cornrow – $16 out to $17

She’s won four from four to date, including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne, and is after a double six juveniles before her going back to 1957 have completed.

Everything has pointed to an easy win here by Earthquake, until the Golden Slipper barrier draw and today’s Rosehill track report.

The shortie in the markets came up with barrier 13 when gates were allocated for the lucrative clash earlier in the week.

It’s the only Golden Sipper barrier yet to produce a winner, and a nasty one to come up with.

However Earthquake has dodged a bullet statistically speaking today as the Golden Slipper emergency, Scratch Me Lucky (12), has been withdrawn.

This means she’ll come into barrier 12 instead of the race’s hoodoo gate; the last Golden Slipper winner to jump from 12 being Inspired back in 1984.

While Golden Slipper odds have eased out from $2.50 – $2.80 on Earthquake, her main danger Mossfun continues to firm with money on her handling the currently Heavy-rated track well.

Money has been steady for the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained daughter of Mossman who has firmed in from $5.50 to $4.20.

She’s drawn in 11, a barrier that has produced three wins since 1983 most recently the Gai Waterhouse-trained Ha Ha (2001), and is looking to turn the tables on her last start conqueror.

Following three straight wins, including a four length effort in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on March 1, Mossfun was last seen running one and a quarter lengths second behind Earthquake in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22.

While she couldn’t pick up the winning filly that day on a Good track, she relished a Slow (7) for her Silver Slipper triumph.

That was her second win on Slow going too following her victory in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m), also held at Rosehill, and so on the rain-affected ground today could be an upset chance over Earthquake who hasn’t run on worse than a Good (3).

Earlier in the week the third line of Golden Slipper betting was occupied by Snowden’s Group 2 Todman Stakes winner Ghibellines ($12 not out to $13) who broke their maiden status a fortnight ago in a fighting finish.

That position however is now held by Peter Moody’s runner Bring Me The Maid, a winner of two of her three career starts to date.

The punters are coming hard and fast for this in-form daughter of Sebring who has been smashed in from $13 to $9.

She’s on the seven-day back-up having put in a top run at the track last weekend to win the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).

That was her Sydney debut and she’ll improve on the run.

Bring Me The Maid also proved she was a nice little mudlark in the race winning on a Heavy (8) track, a nice omen ahead of similar conditions today.

She’ll also be given an emotional ride by Chad Schofield here who lost his brother-in-law Nathan Berry this week.

Also on the drift along with Ghibellines meanwhile are Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Unencumbered ($14 out to $16) who now has the horror barrier 13 draw to overcome and the Mick Price-trained Blue Diamond third placegetter Cornrow ($16 out to $17) who ran second and third respectively behind Ghibellines in the Todman.
