Catkins To Queen Of The Turf Stakes After 2014 Emancipation Stakes Victory

Catkins will have her next race start in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Royal Randwick in a fortnight after recording a comfortable victory in the 2014 Emancipation Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

Catkins was extremely well-backed in the lead-up to the Emancipation Stakes and did not give punters any problems after jumping from the gates well; running away from the rest of the field to score a comfortable win from Sharnee Rose and Angel Of Mercy.

Trainer Chris Waller has said on a number of occasions that Catkins could replace Red Tracer as the leading mare in Australian racing and he is happy with the daughter of Dubawi heading into the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 19, but admitted that he is always worried when he has short-priced favourites in big races.

“She does us very proud,” Waller said.

“You feel the pressure with favourites; my heart was pumping through my chest at the 600 metre mark.

“She is doing a great job.”

Hugh Bowman has ridden Catkins in each of her race starts this campaign, including wins in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) and Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1500m), and he has been happy with the progress she has made this preparation.

The leading hoop was happy with the effort of Catkins, but revealed that the four-year-old did not travel particularly comfortably on the heavy Rosehill Gardens surface.

“I must admit when I gave a kick I wasn’t affair of where the other were and it is a big wet for her liking,” Waller said.

“Slow ground is fine, but this is genuine heavy ground and when I let her off the bridle I felt her just dip and dive a little bit on the going.

“It wasn’t as sweet for me as it was for everybody else, but she is a wonderful mare and I can’t tell you what a thrill it is to win for the Ingham Family on this wonderful raceday here in Sydney.”
