Gerald Ryan-trained Bachman stormed down the outside of the field to score a strong win in the 2014 The Schweppervescence at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.
Bachman was settled towards the tail of the field by jockey Nash Rawiller and received a lovely trail in the race before showing an impressive turn-of-foot to hit the front at the 200 metre mark and run away from the rest of the field to record a comfortable win from Golden Slipper emergency Scratch Me Lucky and the well-backed Veuvelicious.
Ryan has had a big opinion of Bachman since he made his racing debut with a fourth place finish behind Fighting Sun in the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m and believes that he will be even better as a two-year-old; with the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) already on the agenda for the son of All American.
“I think that he is a really nice horse and whatever he does as a two-year-old he will do a lot better as a three-year-old,” Ryan said.
“When he came in early in the season he was struggling a little bit, but I had a really good wrap on him the first couple of times of galloping.
“I said to (owner) Damien Flower then, if I had ever had a horse that is a Caulfield Guineas horse I think this is it.
“We will just poke along quietly with him, he might have one more or he may go to the paddock now, but I think that he has the makings of a really nice horse.”
Nash Rawiller has now ridden Bachman on two occasions for two wins, after winning at Warwick Farm on March 20 with the colt, and was happy with the performance of the talented juvenile in The Schweppervescence, but believes he still has plenty of improvement in front of him.
The leading Sydney hoop said that Bachman got through the heavy Rosehill Gardens surface fairly, but was not particularly positive in his assessment of the track.
“He is still learning this horse; he did a lot wrong in the run and it wasn’t until the 600 that his confidence started to grow and you had to be happy with the way he put the rest of them away.
“It (the Rosehill Gardens track) is not great and it is very inconsistent.
“He dipped quiet badly a couple of times and you need a horse that is a bit nimble on his feet.”
