Moriarty Headlines 2014 Neville Sellwood Stakes Field

Imported stayer Moriarty has been included in the 2014 Neville Sellwood Stakes field and will carry the equal top-weight of 56.5 kilograms in the Group 3 event at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Moriarty (barrier one) has not scored a race win since he took out the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, but has raced consistently since returning to the races in February; finishing eighth in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m), third in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), fourth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and sixth in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

The Clodovil gelding will be joined in the Neville Sellwood Stakes field by stablemates Permit and Junoob, who were both scratched from the Manion Cup last weekend.

Junoob (barrier five) stamped himself as a contender for the leading staying events during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with a win in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on March 15, but he broke off a small piece of hoof during the run and has had synthetic hoof filler applied to his near fore and near hind.

The only other horse taking winning form into the Neville Sellwood Stakes this weekend is progressive Team Hawkes-trained gelding Entirely Platinum (barrier nine).

Entirely Platinum started his autumn campaign with a win in the Vinery Yearlings Handicap (1400m) at Warwick Farm on February 19 before taking out the Schweppes Handicap (1600m) at the same venue on March 8 and making his debut at Group level with an impressive win in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22.

The son of Pentire will carry 55.5 kilograms and will jump from barrier nine with James McDonald on board.

Arguably the most interesting runner in the 2014 Neville Sellwood Stakes is veteran stayer Maluckyday, who is chasing his first race win since he took out the 2010 Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) before going on to finish second behind Americain in the Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Maluckyday (barrier seven) performed fairly in four race starts during the spring last year and returned to the races with an eye-catching fifth in the Group 3 Newmarket Handicap; storming home in the final stages of the race after missed the start.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained trio of Julienas (barrier eight), Hippopus (barrier 12) and Vaquera (barrier two) have also been included in the 2014 Neville Sellwood Stakes final field, while John O’Shea will be represented by both Disclaimer (barrier four) and Lucky Lago (barrier 11).
