Gai Waterhouse’s Melbourne Cup champ Fiorente is looking to improve on a disappointing last start loss and return to the Group 1 winners’ stall in the 2014 The BMW at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

Kicking off a triple shot of Group 1 racing action on Golden Slipper Day, this year’s $1.5 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) has drawn a final field of 11 hopefuls.

To wear the number one saddlecloth, and jump from barrier one as well where they’ll get every chance, is Monsun stallion Fiorente.

Runner-up in the 2012 Melbourne Cup, the import achieved something very few horses have been able to do, come back from a second in the world’s richest handicap 12 months later to win.

They handed their trainer with her maiden ‘Loving Trophy’ in the spring, then returned this autumn in Melbourne to add another elite level to their name second-up in the Australian Cup.

Fiorente was tipped to continue the winning streak with a Group 1 Ranvet Stakes triumph at Rosehill on March 22.

After getting held three wide by eventual third placegetter It’s A Dundeel however they didn’t get the run up front they needed.

In the end they could only manage to run four lengths away seventh to the upset winner Silent Achiever.

It’ll be an exciting Ranvet Stakes rematch in The BMW field then this weekend, with a number of the top performers set to back up.

Roger James’ Ranvet Stakes winner Silent Achiever has drawn barrier four for her attempt at back-to-back Group 1 wins, the New Zealand-trained O’reilly mare to be ridden by Nash Rawiller once again.

Winner of the 2012 New Zealand Derby as a three-year-old, Silent Achiever has plenty of experience in Group 1 Sydney races including her very close second to Fiveandahalfstar in last year’s The BMW.

A post-race examination revealed she’d been injured during that run, so she’ll be out to atone and go one better this year.

Fellow Kiwi It’s A Dundeel meanwhile will be out to turn the tables on Silent Achiever after their Ranvet Stakes third, trainer Murray Baker confident they’ll get a shot from gate eight with their regular rider James McDonald staying on.

There were few excuses for the High Chaparral four-year-olds’ loss last start, but this classy five time Group 1 champion could be ready for the extra distance as they won the Australian Derby by six lengths over the 2400m around this time last year.

Ranvet Stakes fourth placegetter, the Chris Waller-trained Hawkspur, meanwhile is a notable non-acceptor in The BMW field.

Waller is still represented in the race however by two from his stables, his veteran seven-year-old Brigantin (barrier five) and Foreteller in nine with Craig Newitt to ride.

Another rising eight-year-old, Dansili gelding Foreteller comes off a Ranvet Stakes eighth where they were flat in the end and well beaten.

Their run before that though was much better, an Australian Cup third, and if the top performers there bounce back from the Ranvet then Foreteller is right in the mix again.

Also with dual acceptors is Robert Hickmott with 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon coming off an Australian Cup second and evergreen eight-year-old Mourayan who ran fourth in that same race – drawn in seven and 10 respectively.
