Just eleven runners will line up for a tilt at the 2014 Group 3 TL Baillieu Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens this weekend, including 2014 Golden Slipper emergency Scratch Me Lucky.
While yet to hit peak condition in only six race starts to date, Scratch Me Lucky (barrier 11) has displayed a keen turn of foot in the dying stages of several races so far including the Australian Turf Club Maiden (1200m) on March 5th, finishing nearly two lengths in the clear of Country Warrior.
Having been included in nominations for the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on April 12th, trainer Paul Perry is confident the talented Snitzel colt will carry winning form into the major event for two-year-olds with success in the TL Baillieu Handicap.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse will be offered twice the chance of success in this 2014 TL Baillieu Handicap, having accepted positions in the final field for classy stable mates Hampton Court and Giuliani.
Contesting only three race starts to date, Hampton Court was unlucky to finish second behind Brazen Beau in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1100m) on debut in February, and was unable to overcome a blocked run when seventh in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on March 1st.
Hitting peak form when strolling home to win the Tal Beaumont 2.y.o. Handicap (1400m) last time out, Waterhouse is confident of Hampton Court’s chances in the TL Baillieu Handicap having drawn the ideal barrier 2.
Giuliani appeared on course with an impressive turn of foot to finish just half a length behind classy two-year-old Unencumbered in the Sharp Plate (1000m)on October 12th, stamping his claims as a genuine two-year-old contender when returning for fourth in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) last time out.
Having drawn the central barrier 6, Giuliani’s chances in the 2014 TL Baillieu Handicap gained huge momentum Wednesday when in-form jockey Chad Schofield was confirmed to take the ride on Saturday.
Relatively unheralded runner Veuvelicious will carry winning form into the 2014 TL Baillieu Handicap, following up an impressive run for third in a Super Vobis Handicap event over 1300 metres with a near-two length win in a proceeding Super Vobis event over 1500 metres.
Only one other runner will carry winning form into the 2014 TL Baillieu Handicap, that being exciting Gerald Ryan-trained prospect Bachman, who will leave from the ideal inside barrier this weekend.
Impressive when fourth in the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on debut in February, Bachman was unlucky when blocked for a run and third in a two-year-old Handicap event at Canterbury Park before claiming a maiden victory in a two-year-old handicap event at Warwick Farm over 1300 metres on March 20th.
Confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Nash Rawiller in the TL Baillieu Handicap, the All American colt will be particularly hard to beat if in good position rounding onto the final straight.
