Leading trainer Mick Price walked away from this afternoon’s Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) barrier draws a happy man, having been allocated ideal gates for talented colts Jabali and Cornrow.
Having saddled the impressive stable mates to second and third in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) respectively, Price told TVN he could not be happier with the added pre-race luck for Jabali, who will leave from the inside gate on Saturday, and Cornrow, who will jump from the central barrier 8.
“No complaints here” an ecstatic Price said following this afternoon’s barrier draw in Sydney City.
Jumping as a leading contender in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago, Jabali was unable to match the late pace of his competitors, finishing a disappointing seventh.
Despite the less-than-ideal result, Price believes the inside gate will prove to be the decisive factor in a strong performance from the talented Exceed And Excel colt.
“Jabali has the perfect gate and he’ll need room, but they usually fan out on the home turn, and I’m told two or three of the last four winners have started from barrier 1” Price said.
Cornrow has delivered an impressive and consistent five race career to date, finishing outside the places just once and running a competitive third in both the Blue Diamond Stakes and Todman Stakes most recently.
“And Cornrow is in a great spot that gives Ollie (Damien Oliver, jockey) plenty of options” Price added.
Having both drawn well, Jabali and Cornrow have firmed in betting markets for the 2014 Golden Slipper; Jabali cutting in from long odds of $27 to currently feature at a much more respectable $21, while Cornrow can now be taken by punters at $14 and continually firming.
Yet to be defeated in four impressive race starts to date, Blue Diamond Stakes champion Earthquake is clear favourite in betting markets for the 2014 Golden Slipper at a quote of $2.20, ahead of Mossfun ($6.50) and Todman Stakes champion Ghibellines ($10).
