Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A field of 15 two-year-olds have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Group 3 TL Baillieu Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens, including talented Gai Waterhouse-trained pair Giuliani and Hampton Court.
Impressing in only two race starts to date, Giuliani was unlucky to finish second to leading colt Unencumbered in his maiden race on October 12th, and produced a strong turn of foot to run from the rear of the field to finish fourth in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) first-up this season.
Having also been nominated for the 2014 Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) , the exciting Manhattan Rain colt was judged to have no gained the experience of the talented final field for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, and is now set to contest the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) the following weekend.
While disappointing when seventh in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m), two-year-old colt Hampton Court has bookended that poor result with two promising runs; debuting with an unlucky second to Brazen Beau in a two-year-old Maiden Handicap event on February 5th and winning a two-year-old Handicap event in the clear of Tashbeeh and fellow TL Baillieu Handicap nominee Lord Beckworth last time out.
Having also been nominated for the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Waterhouse has confirmed she will let results in this weekend’s TL Baillieu Handicap dictate the next move for Hampton Court.
One of two Paul Perry-trained runners nominated for the 2014 TL Baillieu Handicap, Lord Beckworth has steadily built to the task at hand over four race starts to date, finishing a forgettable ninth in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m) first-up, improving for sixth in the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on February 15th before winning a two-year-old Handicap event at Wyong on March 6th.
Producing another strong turn of foot to finish third behind Hampton Court most recently, Perry is confident the building Not A Single Doubt colt has the class to contend this weekend.
Arguably offered the best chance of victory in the 2014 TL Baillieu Handicap, stable mate Scratch Me Lucky has also been nominated for this weekend’s Group 3 at Rosehill, but was this morning confirmed as the sole emergency for the Group 1 Golden Slipper.
Contesting six competitive race starts to date, Scratch Me Lucky has quickly risen to prominence over his last two events, winning a two-year-old Handicap event over 1200 metres on March 5th before producing a good turn of foot to finish 6th amongst classy opposition in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) last time out.
While unlikely to gain a spot in the Golden Slipper final field, Perry is confident of walking away from Rosehill this weekend one Group 3 crown richer.
A final field of 15 and barrier draw for the 2014 TL Baillieu Handicap is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
