2014 Doncaster Prelude Nominations

A field of Doncaster Mile-bound hopefuls have been nominated for one of the classic’s final lead-up races, the $150,000 Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

A bumper 27 nominations were taken for this year’s 2014 Doncaster Prelude, a final chances for middle distance sprinters to make the cut for the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick Saturday week.

While running in the Prelude gives the horses just seven days before the Doncaster Mile on April 12, it is a last chance for many of them to get into the Group 1’s field.

Currently the futures Doncaster Mile odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are firmly led by Messene ($3.30), emphatic three length winner of the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 22.

The shortest priced of the Doncaster Prelude nominees in those same Mile markets meanwhile is Sharnee Rose at $26.

The Kris Lees-trained Nadeem mare has had three Group 1 starts to date for a third and two fourths.

The first was to Atlantic Jewel when she finished in the money in the 2011 Thousand Guineas before a Schweppes Oaks fourth in Adelaide in 2012 and most recently her fourth to top mare Red Tracer in last year’s Myer Classic.

This time in she’s had three runs, including a Wiggle Stakes second to Catkins, before her seventh when weakening over the final furlong in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at this same track and distance two weeks ago.

The next best in Doncaster Mile betting nominated for the Prelude on Saturday is then the Chris Waller-trained Weary at $31.

The imported French grey has had just the two runs down under, Weary last seen catching the eye with a good second to Messene in the Ajax Stakes.

Along with Weary Waller has also nominated for six other hopefuls including Group 3 Summer Cup winner I’m Imposing, Secessio stepping up to Group company for the first time if accepted and another imported grey Danchai having just their second run in Australia.

But it is unlikely the Prelude winner will come from high up the Doncaster odds, plenty of Saturday’s better chances at long prices for the following week’s major.

Currently heading the Doncaster Prelude weights and ballot with 59kg is Ron Quinton’s veteran Catbird gelding Monton, the Group 1 performer coming via an Ajax Stakes fifth.

The other heaviest weighted nominees are then Sharnee Rose (56.5kg), Ajax Stakes third placegeter Malavio (57kg), Peter Moody’s Newcastle Newmarket Handicap runner-up Strawberry Boy (56kg) and the Hawkes-trained Mecir (56kg) coming off a win in that same Group 3 race from March 19.

Also in the Doncaster Prelude mix pre-acceptances are the likes of  Savabeel mare You’re So Good coming off a Group 2 placing at Moonee Valley, Hussonet five-year-old Angel Of Mercy, Scone-based six-year-old Kaypers, and the Joe Pride-trained duo of Maluckyday and Destiny’s Kiss.

Runner-up to Americain in the 2010 Melbourne Cup in their most famous run, Zabeel seven-year-old Maluckyday hasn’t won a race since that year’s Lexus Stakes but caught the eye first-up when fifth at Newcastle.

Destiny’s Kiss meanwhile resumes here, the Power Of Destiny gelding last seen running third in the Gosford Cup back in early January.

See below for the full Doncaster Prelude 2014 nominations, cut to a capacity 17-starter final field at acceptance stage on Wednesday morning.

In the meantime why not gear up for a big weekend on the punt by opening your account at Ladbrokes.com.au where your first deposit will be matched dollar for dollar as a bonus bet valued up to a juicy $250!
