Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Guy Walter’s last start Group 3 winner Zanbagh is among the top-rated nominees for the Vinery Stud Stakes 2014 on Golden Slipper Day this weekend.
A trio of elite levels highlight the Rosehill race card on Saturday including the $400,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) for the three-year-old fillies.
The race has this year attracted a bumper 27 nominations including Bernardini filly Zanbagh who comes off a good win in the Group 3 Keith Nolan Classic over the Kembla Grange mile.
That was her third run of the season and showed improvement on a fifth to Thump before that in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m), Zanbagh tipped to improve over the extra distance on Saturday.
She’s been right up to 2500m and thrived over that in Melbourne last spring when narrowly defeated by Kirramosa when second in the Group 1 Crown Oaks at Flemington.
Also coming via the Keith Nolan is third placed Metaphorical for Peter Moody and Sam Kavanagh’s fourth placegetter Interspersed.
Dylan Thomas filly Metaphorical is only lightly raced having had just the six starts to date for two wins last September, her lead-up form ideal for an improved run here where she sees Rosehill for the first time.
Interspersed meanwhile is a nicely bred daughter of Sebring from Tale Of The Cat Mare Scattered who enjoyed a Canberra Guineas win before her Nolan Classic fourth.
The other major lead-up race the punters will be doing the form on for Saturday’s Vinery Stud Stakes is then the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) held at Moonee Valley on March 21.
Lots of the fillies that ran in that Victorian feature are nominated for the big one in Sydney here including the winner Marianne.
A daughter of Darci Brahma, Marianne is in flying form having won or run second in all seven of her most recent runs.
In fact the only time she ran outside the top two was her debut in March last year when fifth in a Listed Flemington race where she was injured during the running.
This season she’s been exceptional so far with a Group 3 second first-up to Spirits Dance, second to the same mare in the Angus Armanasco in February, a Kewney Stakes second to Solicit at the start of March and then her tight victory in the Alexandra when stepped up to the mile for the first time – so is jumping out of her skin for her Sydney debut on the weekend.
The other major Alexandra Stakes players in the Vinery Stud mix include runner-up Suavito, also third in the Kewney Stakes, whose jockey Damien Oliver lodged an unsuccessful protest for first and fourth placegetter Solicit.
Prior to her Alexandra Stakes fourth, Solicit enjoyed a Group 2 Flemington win beating home Suvaito and Girl In Flight in the Kewney Stakes (1400m) on the back of a three length victory first-up by three lengths in the Group 3 The Mittys Vanity.
Third in last year’s Crown Oaks, Solicit is one of the best tried in the Vinery Stud with 10 starts from which she’s finished out of the money just twice.
Other notable locals include the Chris Waller-trained Redoute’s Choice filly All Cerise coming via a fourth in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 22, runner-up in that same race for the same trainer Define and Amanpour for Gai Waterhouse who won at Kensington by seven lengths not long ago.
Then there’s the form from across the Tasman to consider with two Group 1 performing Kiwi fillies in the mix with New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Mossman and New Zealand Derby runner-up Rising Romance.
