Time For War Claims 2014 Pago Pago Stakes

Time For War has sprinted well in the final straight to claim the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon ahead of Kumaon and Klammer.

Jumping well, Time For War took up the lead early and dictated terms over the back straight and rounding the bend, finding the early final straight in the clear to sprint well and maintain to the line, just beating pre-post favourite Kumaon by a nose, who was unable to overcome a poor jump; talented two-year-old Klammer crossing the line a competitive third.

Trainer Gerald Ryan was delighted with the performance of the exciting Snitzel colt in the 2014 Pago Pago Stakes, but confirmed he will not accept a position in the final field of the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) next weekend.

“He’s a tricky horse because at home he shows nothing, but he goes to race day and he gets the job done” Ryan said following the race.

“He’s not entered in the Slipper; he’s always been aimed towards the Sires.

“I said to Scott the other day we’ll be going to the Sires of the Kindergarten and I think on today’s effort on first reflection he’ll be going to the Kindergarten, he won’t be going to a 1400 metre race.”

Apprentice jockey Damien Thornton delivered a sensational ride on Time For War in the Pago Pago Stakes, securing an elusive Group 2 title and was quick to praise the efforts of the classy two-year-old, whom he has now partnered in both competitive race starts.

“I’ve ridden him his whole prep and I get along with the horse really well” a pleased Thornton said immediately after dismounting.

“He’s a tough horse, he’s honest and he’ll try; that’s all you can ask for.”

Having secured a ballot-free entry into the Group 1 Golden Slipper on April 5th, a run in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) or Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) is shaping as the likely option for Time For War next up.
