A star studded line-up of Group 1 performing three-year-olds are engaged in this year’s 2014 Rosehill Guineas, exclusive betting tips for the Sydney classic detailed below.
Last year’s Rosehill Guineas was dominated by Kiwi raider It’s A Dundeel who scared off the bulk of the season’s three-year-olds with the race attracting a field of just eight starters.
This Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival the competition is far more open and the race should be a cracker with 17 running in the $500,000 Group 1 over the 2000m at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday.
It’s a two horse battle for top spot in the Rosehill Guineas odds currently with Peter Moody’s Randwick Guineas champ Dissident and last start NZ Derby winner Puccini both at $5 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Hot on their heels in the markets is then Danny O’Brien’s history making Cox Plate winner Shamus Award ($6.50) and the Gold Coast-trained Teronado ($8) on the improve for Bruce Hill.
There’s talent aplenty further down the odds too including the John O’Shea-trained Savvy Nature ($15) and NZ 2000 Guineas winner Atlante ($15) looking to go back-to-back in the Rosehill Guineas for last year’s winning trainer Murray Baker.
So who do you back and who do you sack? Having just published our insider Rosehill Guineas 2014 Form Guide & Betting Analysis, we’ve come up with the below tips on Rosehill Race 8.
#1 Shamus Award ($6.50)
Good price for O’Brien’s champion three-year-old who rewrote history in the spring becoming the first maiden to take out the Cox Plate. Their form this time has also been impressive including their Australian Guineas win over the Flemington mile. Yet to race in Sydney having had their lead-up in the Australian Cup, but should be okay the other way. Cup effort was sixth to Fiorente, were up the front but weakened late. Should be fitter having been back up to the distance now and will appreciate getting back up against their own age. Need to stay out of trouble from the inside alley, but that gate is as good as any with the right run.
#4 Puccini ($5)
This one is flying back home and while Peter McKay’s Encosta De Lago colt is yet to race down under, history says the Kiwis have a great record here. It’s A Dundeel did it as favourite last year and Jimmy Choux (2011) before him, but they did have previous runs on Aussie turf. Still the form is right and they’ll get their chance from gate two. Winner over the distance and NZ Derby victory was easy. Need to handle coming back the 400m though, but with 14 starts already they know how to do their job and have also won over 1600m.
#14 Cadillac Mountain ($21)
So many nice roughie shots in this one, but for us there’s something catching the eye about Moody’s other runner. Sure the star stable mate comes off a Randwick Guineas success but this Reset gelding has come via a different path and could be equally competitive on the weekend adding good value to the exotics. Won first-up at Sandown before their second in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley. That was a top run indicating better things to come, but this is a big step up in class.
