Canny Ballad was settled towards the tail of the field in the early stages of the race and was caught up with four different runners coming around the final turn, but was still able to show an impressive turn-of-foot to score a narrow win from outsider Price Of Glory and stablemate Jacquinot Bay.

The Dream Ballad gelding started his 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign with four straight second place finishes and trainer Guy Walter was delighted to finally get a win on the board in such a big race.

“He is certainly deserving of a win; he has run seven or eight seconds in his short career,” Walter said after the race.

“We were hoping that he would run 2000 and fortunately it has worked out.

“I thought it was a fabulous win and it is a dream come true for the owners – they have been very patient with him.

“We will have a think about what we are going to do; we might go to Wagga or we might run him in the Japan Trophy Race over the carnival.”

Kathy O’Hara was reuniting with Canny Ballad for the first time since he finished second in the Panucci Transport Handicap (1600m) at Warwick Farm on August 24 and was thrilled to pick up a win on the four-year-old in a Listed event.

The leading Sydney hoop said that Canny Ballad received a lovely run into the race and she was impressed with the acceleration that the gelding showed after getting checked at the top of the straight.

“He enjoyed a beautiful run from his barrier and there was a little interference on the corner actually.

“He came out of that a little bit unbalanced and he took the entire long Albury straight to get there, but he was really mowing them down and he relished the 2000 meters.

“I couldn’t pull him up either, so he didn’t have any problems with the journey.

“He has been unlucky not to win before and I am happy that I’ve got back on this horse and he has won this race for Guy and the owners.”
