Shamus Award Eyeing Third Appearance in History Books This Weekend

A proven performer on the tracks of Melbourne, having claimed both the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in the last six months, trainer Danny O’Brien is confident talented three-year-old Shamus Award will have no issue running in the opposite direction in his Sydney debut in this weekend’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Having worked well in reverse training sessions since a disappointing fifth in the Group 1 Australian Cup last time out, O’Brien told Racing Victoria News the classy Snitzel colt had taken to work well and will find the Rosehill Guineas in peak condition.

“He’s in great shape; he’s had a couple of reverse gallops to get him ready for the Sydney direction” O’Brien said.

“We’re looking forward to getting him up to Sydney and hopefully seeing him reproduce his last run against three-year-olds, which was a dominant win in the Australian Guineas.”

Not one winner of the Australian Guineas has ever been able to back-up and win the Rosehill Guineas; a feat O’Brien believes is under its greatest threat so far with Shamus Award.

Becoming the first maiden to claim the Cox Plate, and also becoming the first runner to ever complete the Cox Plate/Australian Guineas double, Shamus Award will be in prime position to continue thumbing his way through the history books this weekend, having been allocated the ideal barrier 1 for this weekend’s Group 1 feature race.

Shamus Award steadily built to the task at hand over the spring of 2013, finishing second in the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) and third behind Long John and Divine Calling in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) before registering the resounding Cox Plate victory.

Having returned to the track in typically scintillating form this preparation, Shamus Award is currently outright third favourite in betting markets for the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas at a quote of $6, behind Randwick Guineas champion and market mover Dissident ($4.60) and New Zealand raider Puccini ($4.80).
