Spirit Of Boom Claims 2014 William Reid Stakes

Talented Queensland-based sprinter Spirit Of Boom has claimed a maiden Group 1 title, producing a strong charge in the final straight to claim the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last night.

Breaking from the pack in impressive fashion with only 300 metres to run, Spirit Of Boom looked to have comfortably sewn up the William Reid crown until talented gelding Fontelina lunged at the line; at first glance appearing to have stolen the victory.

Understandably requiring a photograph to determine finishing order, trainer Tony Gollan was relieved when confirmed to have claimed only his second title at the top echelon of Australian racing.

“I am just absolutely relieved” Gollan said following the race.

“Talk about highs and lows; I thought that we won on the line and then I thought we got beat, but now we have won.

“This is my second Group 1 as a trainer and I am wrapped to have won it here.

“He has given us an amazing ride this horse and he is very deserving to have won a Group 1.”

Having revealed the talented Sequalo entire will retire from racing for a stud career at season’s end, Gollan confirmed the William Stakes victory has not ended his season prematurely, with a tilt at the major Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 12th still well and truly on the cards.

“He is a very tough stallion; he has been racing now for many seasons and he enjoy his racing” Gollan added.

“We will get him over this run and head to Sydney for a crack at the T.J.”

While only the third occasion he has partnered the classy six-year-old, jockey Michael Rodd delivered a sensational ride on Spirit Of Boom in the William Reid Stakes, and was ecstatic to help deliver Gollan another Group 1 title.

“I can’t tell you how much this means to me” Rodd said immediately after dismounting.

“I’ve known Tony since I was a little kid.

“This horse has been a bridesmaid for so long and I went past the post and I actually thought I got done.

“He is a stallion, he is a Group 1 winner now and this is what they have been chasing.”
