Ghibellines Causes Major Upset to Win 2014 Todman Stakes

Talented two-year-old Ghibellines has caused a huge boil-over in producing an incredible sprint to claim the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon ahead of a particularly talented field of colts and geldings.

Having jumped well, the exciting Shamardal colt settled on the heels of early pace setters Lockroy, Jabali and Risen From Doubt, rounding the bend in good position before exploding from the pack with pre-post favourite Unencumbered to finish nearly a length-and-a-half in the clear, Mick Price-trained runner Cornrow running through to claim third.

Trainer Peter Snowden had previously underlined the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12th as the likely target for Ghibellines this preparation following a less-than-convincing run in the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) in Canberra last time out, but admitted he will now need to reconsider a possible Golden Slipper berth following this afternoon’s success.

“I was the first to put my hand up after Canberra because I thought he was very disappointing” Snowden said following the Todman Stakes.

“We’ve done a lot of work with him over the past couple of weeks; we went all over the horse and found there was nothing wrong with him physically, just mentally so we just had to get him to harden up.

“He did have a good run in the race though, probably the three lengths he pinched on the corner was a winning move for him but I can’t take away from the win; it was a good effort, he had to dig deep.

“Today he stayed straight, angled up and he kept a straight line throughout and was good late.

“There’s probably every chance now, you’d probably have to give him a crack at it (Golden Slipper).”

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy delivered a perfectly time ride on Ghibellines in the Todman Stakes and was happy to have reversed the poor result in Canberra most recently.

“He’s obviously come on from his race in Canberra and Pete’s got a bit tough on him and he fluffed the start today but he was very good finishing” McEvoy said after dismounting.

“Today he got in a nice enough rhythm and he really built up underneath me around the bend and was strong from the 400 home, so a quick run Slipper could really suit him.”

Ghibellines’ impressive win has now drastically altered betting markets for the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th, with this afternoon’s Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) for fillies set to confirm market order for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
