Sure to settle market order for the major Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on April 5th, the 2014 Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) will feature several leading male contenders for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds at Rosehill Gardens this weekend in their final competitive hit-out before the $3.5 million event.
Having scored five race wins and one place from only seven starts to date, exciting colt Unencumbered has opened and maintained as favourite in Todman Stakes betting markets, currently offered at a quote of $3.70, ahead of Jabali and market mover Risen From Doubt, each currently offered at $3.90 odds.
Will Unencumbered recover from his worse race to date last time out, or can one of his classy opponents find the Todman Stakes line in the clear?
Finishing second in all three race starts to date, Jabali was unlucky to finish second to boom colt Rubick in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) first-up this season and produced a strong turn of foot to finish only one length behind leading two-year-old Earthquake in the major Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) last time out. While drawing the slightly wide barrier 7 for the Todman Stakes, trainer Mick Price is confident the Exceed And Excel colt has the class to overcome all competitors this Saturday and leapfrog Unencumbered in Golden Slipper market order.
Stable mate to Jabali at Price’s Caulfield stables in Melbourne, Cornrow has been the silent achiever in the current two-year-old scene, finishing outside the places only once in four starts which included an impressive third in the Blue Diamond Stakes most recently. The big winner at Wednesday’s Todman Stakes barrier draw, the Duporth colt will leave from in the inside gate and will be partnered by veteran jockey Jim Cassidy.
Awesome Rock ($19)
Talented colt Awesome Rock has produced a strong racing career so far, overcoming a less-than-convincing debut for seventh in the Bishop Joe Grech Memorial Maiden (900m) with a stunning final straight sprint to win the Say It With Flowers Handicap (1300m) and finishing an unlucky second to Zululand in the Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) most recently. Despite drawing the somewhat awkward barrier 8, the exciting son of Fastnet Rock offers punters incredible value for money at his current $19 odds ($4.70 for a place).
