2014 Phar Lap Stakes – Tips and Betting Preview

Following the withdrawal of leading contender Solicit and relatively un-trialled colt Rock Sturdy, the 2014 Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) will feature just 12 runners at Rosehill Gardens this weekend, offering punters several good opportunities to place a winning bet.

Having contested a particularly glittering 2013 campaign, talented filly Guelph has opened and maintained as clear favourite in betting markets for the 2014 Phar Lap Stakes at a currently quote of $3, ahead of Woodbine ($4.60), Traitor ($5) and High Tec ($8).

Can Guelph justify her resounding favouritism amongst punters and win the 2014 Phar Lap Stakes, or will one of her classy opponents find the line in the clear?

1st

Guelph ($3)

Guelph was arguably the highest performing horse in all of Australian racing over the 2013 calender, finishing outside the places in only two races over ten starts and winning no less than four Group 1 crowns. Despite returning to the track in less-than-convincing form and failing to make any impact whatsoever in both the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m), trainer Peter Snowden is confident of a sharp turnaround in form this weekend, particularly from the relatively central barrier 9.

2nd

High Tec ($8)

Finishing no worse than second in four competitive race starts to date, exciting three-year-old High Tec was arguably the biggest winner at Wednesday’s Phar Lap Stakes barrier draw, having been allocated the ideal gate 2. While yet to contest a race at Group level, trainer Trent Busuttin is confident of another strong performance from the High Chaparral colt this weekend, particularly with in-form jockey Hugh Bowman on board.

3rd

All Cerise ($15)

Chris Waller-trained filly All Cerise has returned to the track in 2014 in arguably career best from, claiming the TAB Ipad App Handicap Maiden (1250m) by nearly three lengths first-up before again strolling home to win the TAB Rewards Maiden (1400m) on February 1st and finishing an unlucky second behind talented runner Forever Loved in the Australian Turf Club Maiden (1500m) last time out. Set to leave from barrier 4, punters have offered only a sprinkling of bets for the Redoute’s Choice filly so far, who opened on Wednesday at a quote of $16.
