Mick Price’s Group 1 winning mare Samaready is tipped for more elite level success this Friday night, the four-year-old opening top of the odds for the William Reid Stakes 2014 at Moonee Valley.
One of 10 top sprinters facing off in this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Hacer Group William Reid Stakes (1200m), More Than Ready mare Samaready is third-up for the season.
Four length winner of the Group 1 Moir Stakes at this track and distance during the spring, the 2012 Blue Diamond Stakes champ resumed this autumn with a good third to Snitzerland in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m).
She raced again at Flemington on March 8 but didn’t have the pace to finish better than sixth behind ace stable mate Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m).
Samaready though is tipped for improvement as she gets back to one of her preferred tracks, Moonee Valley, especially after coming up with the inside alley for Friday night’s fight.
As such she is the current $3.60 favourite in a tight William Reid Stakes betting market.
Of her nine rivals, four are also under double figures with:
- #3 Shamexpress ($5) – Danny O’Brien’s smart O’Reilly stallion looking for their first Group 1 win since the Newmarket last autumn, good second in the Black Caviar first-up and had their chance when fourth in this year’s Newmarket last start
- #2 Spirit Of Boom ($5.50) – Brisbane-trained Sequalo six-year-old from the Tony Gollan stables, yet to run a bad race and keeps coming oh-so-close to a Group 1 win much like fellow Queenslander Buffering before their breakthrough, second in the Oakleigh Plate and second again in the Newmarket, sure to come close if not run down the favourite finally
- #9 Gregers ($6) – David Hayes-trained Commands filly was third in the Thousand Guineas during the spring before her second at Moonee Valley in the Group 2 Fillies Classic, Oakleigh Plate fourth when resuming was eye catching and up in class again here after a second from a wide gate (12 of 12) in a black type at Flemington last time out
- #10 Thump ($6) – The other three-year-old filly in the mix, Kris Lees’ daughter of Red Ransom is the early market mover with an ace barrier four draw, comes off a Group 2 Warwick Farm win in the Surround Stakes and comes back to Moonee Valley for the first time since their impressive two and a half length win here over Miracles Of Life in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes last September
For more value punters might also then look at Unpretentious ($13) looking to improve on a last start ninth in the Newmarket and Chris Waller’s resuming Caulfield Cup champ Fawkner ($15) who could find the distance a little sharp.
