Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A talented line-up of 10 sprinters has been announced to face off under the lights in Moonee Valley’s 2014 William Reid Stakes on Friday night.
Bringing an end to the elite level racing action of the Melbourne Festival of Racing, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Hacer Group William Reid Stakes (1200m) is set to run as Race 7 at 9:45pm (AEST).
To wear the number one saddlecloth with ace hoop Craig Williams in the saddle is the resuming Robert Hickmott-trained champion Fawkner.
Drawn in the extreme outside barrier (10) the Reset six-year-old hasn’t raced since their credible sixth behind Fiorente in the Melbourne Cup in early November, that run coming off their victory in the Caulfield Cup.
All but one other runner (#8 Gig) in the William Reid Stakes field on Friday have had at least one run this prep, one of the sure to be favourites being Tony Gollan’s super consistent Queensland visitor Spirit Of Boom.
Set to run from gate eight with Michael Rodd aboard Spirit Of Boom comes off two close seconds this time in, the son of Sequalo desperate for a Group 1 trophy after finishing runner-up behind Lankan Rupee in both the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap.
Also coming off a close call are then the Danny O’Brien-trained O’reilly stallion Shamexpress (barrier seven) and David Hayes’ classy Commands filly Gregers (barrier nine).
Shamexpress was runner-up to Snitzerland when resuming at Flemington on February 15 in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) and were last seen crossing fourth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 8.
Gregers meanwhile, third to Guelph in last year’s Thousand Guineas, was fourth in the Oakleigh Plate first-up and then crossed second in a Listed Flemington feature last time out from a wide barrier (12 of 12).
She’s proven at Moonee Valley having won back-to-back races here last August and last saw the track on October 25 when runner-up to Gypsy Diamond in the Group 2 Fillies Classic over the mile.
The other big name runner is of course Samaready, Mick Price’s Group 1 performer to get the rails run from barrier one here as she races third-up for the season.
The More Than Ready mare won the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) here beating Buffering by an impressive four lengths last September and has been thereabouts this season also.
Her first-up effort was a third in the Black Caviar before she failed to match the speed of the fast finishers in the Newmarket when sixth.
There are then two last start winners in the mix with Robbie Griffiths’ It Is Written drawn nicely in barrier two coming off a black type win at the track from last Friday and Kris Lees’ Red Ransom filly Thump who gets in on 54kg along with Gregers.
Thump improved on a first-up seventh last time out when she showed nice early pace and held on to win the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on March 8.
