Gai Waterhouse’s seemingly unstoppable stayer Fiorente will look to continue their magic run when they head the 10-horse 2014 Ranvet Stakes field at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Running as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:40pm (AEST) this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) is shaping up as a crack showdown between a number of the season’s premier gallopers.
The most notable acceptor is Monsun stallion Fiorente, winner of last spring’s Melbourne Cup.
The six-year-old came back with a Peter Young Stakes win first-up last month and then joined an elite list of champions completing the Melbourne Cup – Australian Cup double last start at Flemington on March 8.
Waterhouse is confident they can win again here as they head towards the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 19 for which they are the current $3.60 favoruite to win.
Despite being a rising seven-year-old the champ has had just the 18 runs and looks the one to beat on Saturday from barrier four with Damien Oliver continuing his association.
Second favourite for the Queen Elizabeth this autumn meanwhile is the Murray Baker-trained It’s A Dundeel, the five-time Group 1 winning Kiwi at $4.40 for the lucrative feature.
It will be an early Queen Elizabeth Stakes preview in the Ranvet then with High Chaparral four-year-old It’s A Dundeel also accepted in the feature.
The top four-year-old jumps from the inside alley with New Zealand expat James McDonald aboard for their second run of the season.
It’s A Dundeel ran second as the beaten favourite in their resuming run behind Boban in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 8.
They lost few admirers that run however as they put in a solid final few hundred metres that they’re sure to improve on here.
Chris Waller won the Chipping Norton with Boban and also plays a strong hand in the Ranvet Stakes field this weekend.
Sydney’s top trainer has a triple shot at the Ravent trophy with Australian Cup third placed Foreteller (barrier five) defending their Ravent Stakes crown, last year’s Queensland Derby champ Hawkspur (barrier eight) who ran third in the Chipping Norton Stakes and fourth in that race Moriarty (barrier seven).
The other most notable final acceptor meanwhile is the other New Zealander, Roger James-trained Silent Achiever (barrier nine) after their third win this time in.
The five-year-old O’reilly mare has won both her starts back home this prep, most recently outclassing them in the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m).
She’s back down under after a credible spring, hoping to repeat some of the feats she achieved in Sydney last autumn including a second in The BMW and improve on her Ranvet fifth behind Foreteller.
