Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Figuring as the final competitive stop for a number of leading 2014 Golden Slipper prospects, the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) has been confirmed to stage the first meeting between exciting two-year-old fillies Earthquake and Mossfun at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.
Earthquake is arguably the most talented two-year-old to surface in Australian Racing since the turn of the century, having not been troubled in any of her three race starts to date.
Debuting with an impressive two-and-a-half length victory in the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) on November 9th, Earthquake was far from hitting top gear in jogging home to claim the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) by three lengths first-up this year, before overcoming the wide barrier 15 and producing an incredible turn of foot to win the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) most recently.
Despite again drawing a wide barrier for the 2014 Reisling Stakes, trainer Peter Snowden in certain Earthquake is yet to reach peak form, and is confident of another memorable race this weekend.
Also yet to taste anything but success in three race starts so far, Mossfun will have to overcome the wide barrier 10 if any chance of challenging Earthquake and continuing her perfect career start in the Reisling Stakes this weekend.
Debuting with a tight win in the Inglis Nursery Two-Year-Old Open (1000m) on December 14th, Mossfun comfortably broke from the pack to finish a length in the clear in the Group 3 Widden Stakes first-up this year, before romping home win the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) ahead of a talented field at Rosehill most recently.
Trainer locally by Team Hawkes, the exciting Mossman filly undoubtedly poses the biggest threat to Earthquake’s record this weekend, and will again be partnered by in-form jockey James McDonald.
Talented fillies Alpha Miss and Lucky Raquie both carry winning form into the 2014 Reisling Stakes, and received huge boosts this morning when allocated the ideal barrier 5 and 2 respectively.
Alpha Miss claimed victory in her two career opening events in October including a memorable sprint to beat Tetsuko to the line in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut.
Finishing fourth behind Mossfun in the Widden Stakes first-up this preparation, the Lucky Owners filly was too good for all competitors in the Pro-Ride Lonhro Plate (1100m) on March 8th.
Lucky Raquie was impressive when third behind Alpha Miss in the Gimcrack on debut, and while less-than-convincing for sixth in the Widden Stakes on February 15th, claimed her maiden race win in the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) ahead of Mr Cha Cha and Klammer on March 9th.
Having outlined the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) as the target for the Encosta De Lago filly this preparation, trainer Gerald Ryan is confident of causing serious ripples to Golden Slipper betting markets this weekend.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse will be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Reisling Stakes, having accepted positions in the final field for classy stable mates Twirl and Sheezalady (barrier 3).
Twirl is yet to finish outside the places in three race starts to date, and was perhaps most impressive when second by a nose to Believe Yourself in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last weekend.
While only contesting one race start to date, Sheezalady is offered a good opportunity to go one better than her second in the Big Sports Breakfast Plate (1100m) on that occasion, receiving the ideal barrier 3 for the 2014 Reisling Stakes.
Danny Bougoure-trained Oakleigh Girl (barrier 6) has also been included in the Reisling Stakes final field, and will be joined by Memorial (barrier 1), Clifton Red (barrier 4) and More Radiant (barrier 8).
