Third favourite for next month’s Golden Slipper Stakes, the Bjorn Baker-trained Unencumbered will continue their autumn campaign in the Todman Stakes 2014 at Rosehill this weekend.
The exciting Testa Rossa two-year-old is one of 13 colts and geldings nominated for this Saturday’s edition of the $300,000 Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m).
It, along with the Reisling Stakes for the fillies, is the latest lead-up race for juveniles heading towards a shot at the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) back at the track on April 5.
All the Slipper favourites are out on show on Saturday too with top fillies Earthquake ($2.75) and Mossfun ($8) to face off in the Reisling.
Unencumbered then occupies the third line of futures Golden Slipper betting at a current quote of $11, and they are also set to dominate the Todman Stakes odds if accepted.
Winner of the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January, on the back of victories in the Wyong edition of the same race in Sydney as well as the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes at Doomben in December, Unencumbered has had the one run this time in.
On March 1 they resumed to finish fifth to Mossfun in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill, an effort they are tipped to improve on here after a four and a half length Warwick Farm trial win from March 11.
The next best fancy in the Golden Slipper odds nominated for the Todman 2014 is then the Tony McEvoy-trained Risen From Doubt ($15).
The Hawkesbury-based Not A Single Doubt colt won the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington on debut during the spring before returning with a last start third in the Silver Slipper Stakes three weeks ago.
They are followed by the Mick Price-trained Exceed And Excel colt Jabali and Wandjina.
Jabali has a great record so far starting with their Maribyrnong Trial second back in October.
From there they returned with a first-up second in the Blue Diamond Prelude before running second again this time in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes behind clear Slipper favourite Earthquake on February 22.
Price has also nominated for his Blue Diamond third placed Duporth colt Cornrow for Saturday.
Wandjina meanwhile is prepared by five-time Golden Slipper winning trainer Gai Waterhouse and has won one of their three starts to date.
The son of Snitzel was last seen crossing fourth behind Alpha Miss in the Listed Lonhro Plate at Warwick Farm on March 8 when defeated under two lengths.
Other notable Todman Stakes nominees this year then include VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes runner-up Awesome Rock, the Peter Snowden-trained Careless in their first run of the season and Lloyd Kennewell’s undefeated Adelaide raider Deiheros.
