Thump Confirmed to Line up for William Reid Stakes

Having nominated three-year-old Thump for possible appearances in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m), Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) this weekend, trainer Kris Lees has decided the exciting filly will line up for Friday night’s feature race at Moonee Valley after a particularly talented field was nominated for Saturday’s feature race.

While considered a competitive chance in all three events after returning to winning form on March 8th, Lees said the decision to finalise Thump in the William Reid was reached as a result of fields, race lengths and group ratings.

“The Coolmore is so strong, as expected, and while the William Reid Stakes is a tough Group 1, it looks the easier option of the two” Lees told TVN this morning.

“I feel Thump is better suited at 1200m than she is at 1500m, especially at the top level and she has also won around Moonee Valley.”

Thump has claimed three wins and three places in only twelve race starts to date, and was particularly strong and consistent over a short 2013 spring preparation, which most notably saw victories in the Group 2 Coolmore Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m).

Unable to match the late pace of her talented rivals when seventh in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 22nd, the talented Red Ransom filly produced a strong turn of foot to comfortably take out the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) ahead of Real Surreal and stable mate Lucia Valentina last time out.

Following the strong run for third in the Surround Stakes, Lees confirmed Lucia Valentina and exciting prospect Sharnee Rose would represent his stables in the Coolmore Classic instead.

“Sharnee Rose would definitely be the pick, this is the race we have been targeting all along and I think she is coming to a peak at just the right time” Lees added.

Following the 2014 William Reid Stakes on Friday night, Thump will be geared towards an appearance in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) on April 19th. is currently offering the best odds on all major races this weekend, including the Group 1 William Reid Stakes!
