Gordon Lord Byron Pleases in Maiden Australian Hit-Out

Leading Jockey Craig Williams is excited by the prospect of partnering classy Irish import Gordon Lord Byron in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 12th after completing an easy piece of work with the six-year-old for the first time at Werribee this morning.

While barely breaking a sweat with the talented Byron gelding, Williams told TVN Gordon Lord Byron has all the makings for a particularly successful tilt at major Australian events.

“His trainer Tom Hogan just wanted me to get a feel for the horse; we basically only cantered around but it gave me an opportunity to get to know him before he does some more serious work on Thursday morning” Williams said.

“His coat is still a littler wintery but he seemed bright and free.

“I’ll know a bit more after I work him again but all seems well at this stage and the main thing is he has handled the trip.”

Having secured nine wins and fourteen places from his 34 race starts to date, Williams is confident Gordon Lord Byron will immediately re-find the form that delivered an unlucky second to talented Brit Moonlight Cloud in the major Group 1 Prix De La Foret (1400m) at France’s renowned Longchamp course on October 6th.

“He set the running in that race, he basically did all the work and Moonlight Cloud used his as a target to run down” Williams added.

“It gives me confident that he has also been to Hong Kong and performed quite well, so he has proved that he can travel” He said of the classy six-year-olds most recent showing for fourth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) in December.

Yet to contest an event on Australia shores, Gordon Lord Byron is currently featured at the particularly generous price of $26 in betting markets for the 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes.

Following a perfect start to his 2014 preparation which has already delivered two Group 1 victories, talented sprinter Lankan Rupee is currently featured as outright $5 favourite for the T.J. Smith Stakes ahead of Not Listenin’tome ($5.50), Buffering ($6.50) and Zoustar ($7).
