This Wednesday in Sydney a field of potential Doncaster Mile hopes will face off at Newcastle in the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap 2014 field.

An always anticipated event, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Enviropacific Newmarket Handicap (1400m) has attracted a final field of 15 hopefuls many of which are nominated for the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on April 12.

Two 2014 Doncaster Handicap hopefuls in the mix are the Gai Waterhouse-trained stable mates Rain Drum and Almighty Charge drawn in the two outside barriers 15 and 14 respectively.

Rain Drum is second-up here, the Fastnet Rock six-year-old having run a credible sixth behind subsequent Canterbury Stakes winner Appearance in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 22.

A Group 2 winner having won last year’s Shannon Stakes they are only lightly raced with Wednesday to be just their 16th career start.

Rain Drum pays around $41 in the futures Doncaster Mile odds while Waterhouse’s other Newcastle Newmarket hope Almighty Charge is a $101 roughie.

The Charge Forward four-year-old has been in super form this time in with two wins and two seconds for 2014, their most recent effort a narrow second behind Ecuador in a Benchmark 95 at Rosehill from March 1.

This will be their first Group race appearance so they are up in class with plenty of work to do from the wide gate.

Also with multiple Newcastle Newmarket Handicap acceptors this year is Peter Snowden who won the event last year with the now internationally based Bello.

Snowden’s chances of successive trophies in the event lie with veteran eight-year-old Pinwheel (barrier seven), Cameo (barrier 10) who is also nominated for the Ajax Stakes in Sydney on Saturday and last start Wiggle Stakes failure Wistful (barrier four).

Pinwheel may be a rising nine-year-old but their form this time in has been as good as ever including a third to Moment Of Change in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield

Their last start was a fourth in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) on March 8, the extra distance on Wednesday to suit.

Other horses that come into the race on the back of some good form meanwhile include the David Payne-trained Thorn Park eight-year-old Centennial Park with the rails run andNational Sprint runner-up last time out Reparations for Anthony Freedman.

Also in the field are decent gallopers including Kris Lees’ imported Slow Pace making their debut down under, the now Peter Moody-trained Strawberry Boy and 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday for Joe Pride.
