Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A less-than-capacity field of 10 runners has nominated for the 2014 Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, including classy Peter Moody-trained Flamberge.
Flamberge has scored five wins and five places from only 15 race starts to date and was particularly consistent over his 2013 autumn preparation, finishing outside the places on only one occasion from a total of seven events.
The talented Exceed And Excel Gelding has returned to the track in strong form this preparation, claiming wins in the East Malvern Bank Maiden (1100m) and Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m), before finishing fifth behind the World’s current leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) most recently.
Having outlined the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 12th as the major target for Flamberge this season, Moody is confident of walking away from Rosehill on Saturday one Maurice McCarten Stakes title richer.
Also geared towards a TJ Smith Stakes appearance, trainer Jason Coyle has nominated talented colt Va Pensiero for the 2014 Maurice McCarten Stakes.
While only claiming three wins and one place from his 11 race starts so far, Va Pensiero produced a consistent spring preparation in 2013, winning his first two starts and finishing fifth behind Zoustar in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) most notably.
Having produced two strong barrier trials so far this season, Va Pensiero will head into the Maurice McCarten Stakes first-up this weekend, and will be particularly hard to beat if allocated a favourable gate at Wednesday’s barrier draws.
Trainer Joseph Pride is set to dominate the final field for the 2014 Maurice McCarten Stakes, having nominated classy runners Title, That’s A Good Idea and Green Beret.
Claiming nine wins and ten places from his 37 race starts to date, Title is without doubt the most experienced runner nominated for the Maurice McCarten Stakes.
While less-than-convincing when sixth behind Territory in the Ibis Milano Dinnner Special (1100m) first-up on March 8, Pride revealed the Honour’s List gelding has returned to work well and should find this weekend’s Group 3 in prime condition.
Exciting four-year-old That’s A Good Idea has built to the task well this season, following up a competitive fourth behind Terravista in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) first-up with a strong third in the Ibis Milano Dinner Special most recently.
Whilst featuring as his most inexperienced runner nominated for the 2014 Maurice McCarten Stakes, Green Beret arguably offers Pride his greatest chance of success this weekend, having claimed a particularly strong Warwick Farm barrier trial with ease of March 11th.
Charge Missile, Kencella, Sente De Noche, Shivarchi and Peter Snowden-trained Montsegur have also been nominated for the 2014 Maurice McCarten Stakes.
