Gai Waterhouse’s unstoppable star stayer Fiorente heads a diminutive but classy list of Ranvet Stakes 2014 nominations for the autumn feature running at Rosehill Racecourse this Saturday.
This year’s $500,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) only attracted 13 entries leading Racing NSW to extend nominations until 11:00am Tuesday.
Leading the original nominees though is last year’s Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente.
The imported Monson stallion returned for the autumn with a Peter Young win before securing the Melbourne Cup – Australian Cup double with an impressive effort at Flemington on March 8.
Heading towards a super showdown in the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 19, Fiorente could first add another elite level to the cabinet in Saturday’s Ranvet Stakes.
They’re already dominating Queen Elizabeth Stakes futures odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.60.
Their biggest perceived danger there is Kiwi champion It’s A Dundeel ($4), Murray Baker’s five-time Group 1 winner also among the Ranvet Stakes nominations.
The four-year-old High Chaparral stallion returned for another season at Warwick Farm on March 8 when they came from the back of the field to finish a length away second to Boban in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).
That was a solid effort and one they should easily improve on second-up.
Aside from Fiorente the only other last start winner in the mix for Saturday is then the Roger James-trained Silent Achiever who, like It’s A Dundeel, represents the New Zealanders.
A five-year-old daughter of O’Reilly, Silent Achiever comes off a Group 1 win back home having outclassed her rivals at Ellerslie a fortnight ago to take out the New Zealand Stakes over the 2000m.
Saturday will be their first run in Australia since their credible Caulfield Cup eighth from last October, and their first run in Sydney since a fourth in last year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes on the back of a The BMW second, Ranvet Stakes fifth and Chipping Norton fourth.
Waterhouse meanwhile has also nominated for her last start Parramatta Cup runner-up Carlton House.
Sydney’s leading horseman Chris Waller also plays a strong hand with four entries in the imported Brigantin, Makybe Diva Stakes champ Foreteller, former star three-year-old Hawkspur and the consistent Moriarty.
All four come off good lead-up form.
Brigantin was third in the Australia Day Cup in January, seven-year-old Foreteller was a close third in the Australian Cup behind Fiorente and Green Moon, Hawkspur impressed with a Chipping Norton third which they’ll improve on going up in distance, while Moriarty ran fourth in that same race.
