A field of potential $2.5 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) hopes have been nominated for the William Reid Stakes 2014 under the lights at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne this Friday night.
One of the last elite levels of the Melbourne Festival of Racing, this weekend’s $400,000 Group 1 Hacer Group William Reid Stakes (1200m) drew 13 early entries.
The nominations then have been extended until 10:00am (AEST) on Tuesday.
Of the original nominees a host are 2014 TJ Smith Stakes-bound with the Sydney classic at Randwick on April 12 firmly on the agenda for a number of the top William Reid hopes.
The shortest-priced of Friday night’s potential runners in the pre-post TJ Smith Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Danny O’Brien-trained Shamexpress ($14).
The four-year-old O’reilly stallion will be third-up for the season if accepted, last year’s Newmarket Handicap champ around this time coming via two decent Group 1 efforts.
First-up they were second to Snitzerland in the Black Caviar Lighting before their fourth when unable to defend their Newmarket title behind Lankan Rupee on March 8.
O’Brien has also nominated for his last start winner Adamantium, the Elusive City five-year-old having defeated Pago Rock in the Listed BOB Hoystead Handicap (1000m) on March 1.
The next best of the TJ Smith Stakes hopes in the mix is then the Mick Price-trained Samaready ($15).
Four length winner of the Moir Stakes over Buffering last September the More Than Ready mare resumed with a Black Caviar Lightning third before she failed to match them in the end when sixth in the Newmarket.
Samaready is joined in the William Reid nominees by stable mate Jazz Song, the lightly raced Fastnet Rock filly having had just the three career starts to date.
Her latest effort was a Group 3 victory however at Moonee Valley from February 21 where she defeated Miss Promiscuity in the Typhoon Tracy Stakes over 1200m.
Aside from Adamantium and Jazz Song the other last start winner is then Havana.
Prepared by Paul Messara in Scone, the Starcraft three-year-old blitzed their rivals at Canterbury on March 12 winning a maiden by four lengths ahead of their acid test here.
Other notable hopes then include the consistent Tony Gollan-trained Queenslander Spirit Of Boom, Savabeel mare You’re So Good for Nigel Blackiston and Peter Moody’s returning More Than Ready gelding Ready To Rip.
Six-year-old Spirit Of Boom is desperate for another Group 1 trophy of their own after a number of close calls having run second to Lankan Rupee in both the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap this season.
The current William Reid Stakes 2014 nominations are detailed below, final acceptances closing on Wednesday morning.
