Dissident Claims Maiden Group 1 Victory in 2014 Randwick Guineas

Seasoned jockey Jim Cassidy has made it 101 Group 1 victories at Royal Randwick this afternoon, claiming the featured Randwick Guineas (1600m) aboard classy three-year-old Dissident.

Having jumped only fairly, Dissident quickly recovered and took up the pace along with Romantic Touch, El Roca and Atlante.

Rounding the final bend in prime position, Dissident and El Roca comfortably pulled clear of the pack, locking in a heated dying stages sprint before the pre-post favourite experienced a slight hiccup and opened the door for Dissident to claim a maiden victory at Group 1 level.

Trainer Peter Moody was thrilled with Dissident’s strong display and ability to maintain a high-tempo sprint in the Randwick Guineas, and was quick to praise the efforts of Sydney stable foreman Claire Cunningham.

“He’s pretty hard to get past and it’s just great” Moody said immediately after the race.

“He’s toughed it out; he’s just got that little bit fitter and a bit more forward every time he’s gone to the races.

“He’s a high quality colt, we saw his efforts here in the spring but he’s come back a bigger, stronger colt and he’s tagged himself one of the best in his age group in the country.

“We go to the Rosehill Guineas, which is the race I’ve always had earmarked, and then it’ll be decision time; whether we go on to the (Australian) Derby or back to the Doncaster (Mile), but it was lovely to see him win over the Randwick mile here today.

“Clare’s done a tremendous job, she’s been up here a couple of years now and it’s no secret this bloke has done most of his racing up here.

“It’s a credit to her and her staff as well as the team home in Melbourne.”

Veteran jockey Jim Cassidy delivered another sensational ride on Dissident in the Randwick Guineas, and has now partnered the Sebring colt to a second a two victories having secured the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago.

While aware of Dissident’s class, Cassidy said today’s result truly underlines the strides he has made since returning to the track in 2014.

“It was a marvellous effort” Cassidy said after dismounting.

“He had a bad alley; I talked to Pete and his foreman Claire and we decided to ride him the same, be positive.

“I wanted to be up there early and when we got up in front we just travelled beautifully, he came back underneath me.

“You don’t win these Group 1’s at the 100, you win them at the line and I knew my bloke wasn’t going to lie down.

“I had El Roca and Romantic Touch sitting beneath me but he relaxed; he’s turning from a boy into a man.”
