Diamond Drill Returns to Form to Claim 2014 Aspiration Quality

Talented four-year-old Diamond Drille has overcome a talented field to win the Group 3 Aspiration Quality (1600m) at Royal Randwick racecourse this afternoon.

Having jumped well, the talented Al Maher mare settled on the heels of early pace setters Porcellanus and Capital Commander, and was able to break clear of the bunched pack after rounding the final bend, displaying a keen turn of foot to beat pre-post market mover Mahara and Danesiri to the line; both of whom were unable to fully recover from poor starts.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was relieved the classy mare was able to contest on a suitable track after less-than-ideal conditions at Warwick Farm last week noticeably inhibited her run.

“Very exciting; she’s a filly that showed so much potential and had a long spell, came back and has never looked back” Waterhouse said.

“Last Saturday on that horrible Warwick Farm track, it just shows it’s vindicated when you get on a good track like Randwick.”

Stable representative of Gai Waterhouse, Mark Newnham was thrilled Diamond Drille was able to secure victory in the Aspiration Quality after poor luck in her opening two events for 2014.

“Her runs have been pretty good; the two runs back she was just trapped in the worse part of the going at Warwick Farm, and that can make a big difference to their chances” Newnham said.

“Today she settled in a good pace and hit the line.

“We like to win any day, but it does make a difference this time of year.”

Jockey Tim Clark delivered a sensational ride on Diamond Drille in the Aspiration Quality, but revealed he was a little unsure of positioning rounding into the final straight.

“It was looking a bit awkward coming into the turn; it was really where I wanted to be” Clark said immediately after dismounting.

“I just had to be patient, there’s a long run in here, took a deep breath and bide my time and she was really good late.”

The Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) on April 19th is shaping as the major target for Diamond Drille this preparation, with a stop off at the Group 1 George Ryder (1500m) also firming as a possibility.
