Believe Yourself Sprints Well to Claim 2014 Sweet Embrace Stakes

Exciting two-year-old Believe Yourself has produced a strong turn of foot in the final straight to hunt down resounding pre-post favourite Twirl and win the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Having jumped from the barriers well, the talented Sebring filly settled well within the pack more-than four lengths off the early pace of Stratical, Twirl and Tetsuko down the back straight and rounding the final turn, before finding clear passage with 300 metres to run, and putting up the fight to her highly rated opponents.

Trainer Gerald Ryan was not expecting such a strong run from Believe Yourself over the distance, and revealed he is now far-more convinced she is a legitimate 2014 Golden Slipper (1200m) contender.

“She’s an amazing little filly; she doesn’t show a whole lot at home but every time I’ve jumped her out of the barriers prior to racing at Kembla and this time, she goes five lengths better out of the gates than what she does on the track” Ryan said following the Sweet Embrace Stakes.

“I always said to Tom (Sekiguchi, owner) I reckon she’d be better at 1400 or 1600 metres; he’s mad on running her in the Slipper and I said if we win her way there we’ll go there.

“Well, she’s in the slipper now.

While offered the opportunity for another preparation run before lining up for the Golden Slipper, Ryan said Believe Yourself will likely return to work at home and only re-appear on course for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds next time out.

“She’s not very experienced and she’s only a little thing, so if she’s fit and well she’ll go to the slipper straight from here” Ryan added.

“She tries her little heart out, she’s amazing little thing at home, is only tiny and what’s there is perfect.”

Believe Yourself has now claimed two wins from as many starts in her short racing career to date, having comfortably won the Dancer Handicap (1000m) on debut at Kembla Grange on December 14th. is currently offering the best odds on all 2014 autumn races, including the Golden Slipper!
