The Canterbury Stakes was expected to be dominated by three-year-old colts Zoustar and Not Listenin’tome, but Appearance finished over the top of the rest of the field, after Rain Affair set a quick tempo in the early stages of the race, to score her fourth victory at Group 1 level and her first in an open class race.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy said that the race was run to suit Appearance and was most impressed with the way that the Commands mare finished off the race when she asked for an extra effort.

“She is just a fantastic race mare,” McEvoy said.

“She obviously enjoys those race conditions and she had the race run to suit.

“The tempo was nice; I was on the back of Red Tracer and I thought that she would be towing me into the race at the right time.

“She peeled out and picked up a couple of times for me in the straight as Group 1 horses do.

“She is on target for a nice campaign now.”

Guy Walter said at the start of Appearance’s 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign that she was ready for a big preparation and the veteran trainer has been delighted with the way the five-year-old has taken out the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m), Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

Appearance missed the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm last weekend due to a minor setback, but Walter believes that could end up being a positive for his star mare.

“She is a fantastic mare,” Walter said.

“She had a bit of a setback, but we took her to Kembla and worked her between races Monday and she worked really well.

“She has come back in distance today and she has done it today; she is just an outstanding mare.

“The plan was the George Ryder, Doncaster and The Queen Of The Turf and there is no reason to change that.

“It may end up being a blessing that she missed the Chipping Norton.”

Chris Waller-trained mare Red Tracer was severely impeded at the start of the race and almost lost her footing, but was still able to storm home in the final stages of the race and looks on track for the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 19.

Not Listenin’tome was able to battle home fairly in the final stages of the race to finish in second, while Zoustar faded badly and completely missed the placings.
